    Port-of-Spain -- April 20, 2009 -- The Fifth Summit of the Americas has come and gone, and after all the pomp and ceremony, delegates and foreign journalists have come to one conclusion: it has been a mess. After going to five Latin American countries, earlier this month, to whip up support, Prime Minister Patrick Manning was the only leader to sign yesterday the document, the Declaration of Port-of-Spain.

    On April 20, 2009, following the conclusion of the 5th Summit of the Americas in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, the Secretaries- General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) and the Central American Integration System (SICA), met to examine the scope for further strengthening coordination among said Secretariats and exchanging opinions regarding their common objectives.

    St. George's -- April 21, 2009 -- The leaders of Grenada and Chile have agreed to deepen diplomatic relations between the two countries in an effort to improve south-south cooperation.

    Port-of-Spain, April 21, 2009 -- Reaffirming that there is no justification for the United States to name The Bahamas in a stop taxation bill, Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. Hubert Ingraham said The Bahamas does not expect that its name will appear in such legislation at the end of the day.

    April 20, 2009 -- Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer is returning from Trinidad buoyed and hopeful that the country’s financial services sector will be looked upon more favourably by the United States. PM  Spencer reported that Antigua and Barbuda and the other members of Caricom made a strong case against the hard line stance taken by America against their offshore sector, frowned upon as providing tax havens for US citizens trying to avoid paying their due to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).


    Basseterre -- April 19, 2009 -- Caribbean leaders on Saturday said United States President, the Hon. Barack Obama will discuss economic aid, gun and drug smuggling and other issues in a second round of private talks with them later this year.

    April 19, 2009 -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper is pushing for greater regional co-operation and better hemispheric trade relations at the Summit of the Americas, pledging $4 billion in loan guarantees for Latin American countries

    St. John's -- April 18, 2009 -- In light of the tough times ahead for the tourism industry regionally and locally, former Chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation (CTO), Harold Lovell, said the crisis has to be met with continued vision and willingness of Caribbean leaders to meet the dynamic changes taking place in the global market.


    April 17, 2009 -- Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Dr. Chelston Brathwaite, will lead a five-man delegation to the Fifth Summit of the Americas being held in Trinidad and Tobago from Friday, April 17, to Sunday, April19.
