    June 1, 2012 - Broadband is expanding rapidly in Latin America and the Caribbean, but the region still lags behind the world’s most advanced nations in terms of coverage, access and adoption of information and communication technology services delivered through fast networks, according to a new report released by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

    A new online petition is demanding that Apple clean up its act overseas in time to make its next iPhone "the first ethical iPhone." Watchdog group SumOfUs last week put up a petition asking Apple to "make the iPhone 5 ethically," referring to the company's use of overseas manufacturing from companies such as Foxconn, which have recently come under fire for their working conditions and practices. A former Apple executive said to the NY Times that “most people would still be really disturbed if they saw where their iPhone comes from” because of horrendous working conditions. Add your name to the petition calling for Apple to make the new iPhone 5 ethically.

    Washington, January 16, 2012 - Today, the World Bank and Google announced an agreement aimed at improving the ability of developing countries to access a web-based community mapping tool and data to help better monitor public services, and improve disaster and humanitarian response efforts. Most developing countries do not have basic local data about where schools, hospitals, or water points are located, and the data they do have is often out of date or incorrect. One way to collect this information is to ask citizens directly, and crowdsource the locations of public infrastructure.





    Nov. 11, 2011 - Seventy-five ICT experts and decision makers including Caribbean Government Ministers, regulators, representatives of regional organizations, operators, suppliers and civil society had open discussions regarding “Accelerating Broadband Development in the Caribbean” during the CANTO-IDB Broadband Forum held at the Hyatt Regency, Miami, on November 7th, 2011.


    SEOUL, Korea - Inter-American Development Bank President, Luis Alberto Moreno, and the Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission (KCC), Choi See Joong, signed today a memorandum of understanding during the Korea-LAC Business Forum to promote the development of information and communications technologies (ICT) in Latin America and the Caribbean.

    CARICOM Secretariat, Guyana -- Oct. 22, 2010 - The regional tertiary education sector will get a major boost, next year, when eight countries of the 15-member Caribbean Community will have their tertiary institutions connected through a regional broadband fibre optic network called C@ribNet.



    March 10, 2010 -- Latin America and the Caribbean still have low access to Internet compared to developed countries, with only 27.1% of its population using the service. The price of Internet services exceeds US$35 a month, much higher than in wealthier countries, where prices average US$19 a month, according to the Monitor of the Information Society.
