Hits and Page Views - What's the Difference?
People have been asking me, so how many hits does the site get?
My response is always the same - the number of 'hits'
don't count.
Many times, you'll see websites claiming to have 100, 000
'hits', 300, 000 'hits', a million hits and so on. Don't be fooled, this is a poor and
inaccurate way of measuring site traffic.
What is a 'hit'?
A 'hit' is the retrieval of any
item, like a page or a graphic, from a Web server.
For example, when a
visitor calls up a Web page with four graphics,
that's five hits, one for the page and four for the graphics. So one
visitor to a site might cause ten hits - nine graphics and one for the
page. But it's still only ONE visitor. For this
reason, hits often aren't a good indication of Web traffic. Page Views are a much better indication of traffic.
What is a Page View?
A Page view is a Web page that has been
viewed by one visitor. Page views are often used in online advertising,
where advertisers use the number of page views a site receives to
determine where and how to advertise.
