    Aug. 24, 2010 -- The French army has been deployed to the French Caribbean departments of Martinique and Guadeloupe to help fight a dengue epidemic, which has been spreading since December. At least 13 people have died of the mosquito-borne virus since the beginning of February.


    CARICOM Secretariat, Guyana -- May 12, 2010 -- The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat Headquarters, Turkeyen, Guyana was the venue on Tuesday May 11 for the historic signing of Phase 11 of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS (PEPFAR)/Caribbean Regional Partnership Agreement Framework between the CARICOM Secretariat and the United States (US) Government.

    First H1N1 Death in Barbados

    Bridgetown - Sept. 29, 2009 -- An adult is the first person in this country to die as a result of Influenza A (H1N1).  This was disclosed today by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr. Joy St. John, who pointed out that the individual had underlying medical conditions.



    Bridgetown -- Sept. 23, 2009 -- Recently, there has been an increase in the incidence of persons with flu-like symptoms seeking medical attention at the eight polyclinics across the island, as well as at the Accident and Emergency Department at the QEH. It is expected that this will continue and may worsen.  


    May 13, 2009 -- International tourism demand has deteriorated further due to the impact of the global economic recession. International tourist arrivals declined at a rate of 8% between January and February this year, leaving the overall volume at the same level as recorded in 2007.

    On Friday 1 May the WHO issued information relating to travel restrictions, providing reasons why it does not recommend travel restrictions related to the outbreak of Influenza H1N1 virus.The WHO's rationale is that limiting travel and imposing travel restrictions would have very little effect on stopping the virus from spreading, but would be highly disruptive to the global community.

    The WHO advisory points to 148 laboratory confirmed cases Worldwide of the swine influenza, including 8 deaths, barely a pandemia..The swine flu pandemic constitutes a corporate bonanza for a handful of BioTech conglomerates.

    April 28, 2009 --- The impact on the tourism sector is closely monitored by UNWTO. At this stage, the major challenge is to avoid travel restrictions based on inaccurate information and perception. It is important to highlight the fact that WHO does not recommend any travel restrictions.


    April 28, 2009 - On April 27, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) Emergency Committee held its second meeting. The Committee considered available data on confirmed outbreaks of human swine influenza A (H1N1) in the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada, as well as reports of possible spread to additional countries. On the advice of the Committee, the WHO Director-General has now raised the level of influenza pandemic alert from the current phase 3 to phase 4:

    April 27, 2009 --There have been over 800 cases of severe acute respiratory illness, including approximately 60 deaths reported from Mexico. 

    Port-of-Spain -- Dec 17, 2008 - Every day, 55 people in the Caribbean are infected with the HIV virus and 38 of them die of the disease. That's 20,000 new infections and 14,000 deaths annually.

    Bridgetown - Jan. 25, 2013 - A new Mental Health Act with provisions for community based services and the protection of the human rights of persons with mental disorders should be in place within the next six months.
