    NEW YORK--March 29, 2011--With their medical school student population facing unacceptable attrition rates, senior managers at a large Caribbean medical school faced board of trustee scrutiny, unwanted regulator attention and the risk of restricted growth. The number of people living with HIV in the Caribbean remains relatively low—240 000 [220 000–270 000] in 2009—and has varied little since the late 1990s.

    Bridgetown -- Sept. 11, 2010 -- Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Joy St. John has confirmed that Barbados is experiencing a dengue epidemic

    Aug. 24, 2010 -- The French army has been deployed to the French Caribbean departments of Martinique and Guadeloupe to help fight a dengue epidemic, which has been spreading since December. At least 13 people have died of the mosquito-borne virus since the beginning of February.


    CARICOM Secretariat, Guyana -- May 12, 2010 -- The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat Headquarters, Turkeyen, Guyana was the venue on Tuesday May 11 for the historic signing of Phase 11 of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS (PEPFAR)/Caribbean Regional Partnership Agreement Framework between the CARICOM Secretariat and the United States (US) Government.

    First H1N1 Death in Barbados

    Bridgetown - Sept. 29, 2009 -- An adult is the first person in this country to die as a result of Influenza A (H1N1).  This was disclosed today by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr. Joy St. John, who pointed out that the individual had underlying medical conditions.



    Bridgetown -- Sept. 23, 2009 -- Recently, there has been an increase in the incidence of persons with flu-like symptoms seeking medical attention at the eight polyclinics across the island, as well as at the Accident and Emergency Department at the QEH. It is expected that this will continue and may worsen.
