WASHINGTON, DC (February 17, 2011) – Now is the time to help colleagues who are performing outstanding public health work in the Americas receive the recognition they deserve. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2011 PAHO/PAHEF Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health at www.pahef.org/awards. The awards recognize innovative individuals, programs, institutions, and organizations advancing health in the region of the Americas, especially in Latin America and/or the Caribbean. Known throughout the Americas as prestigious honors and career milestones, the Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health are a unique opportunity to help bring recognition to
those who have dedicated their careers to improving public health in the Western Hemisphere.

Each award consists of a cash prize or research grant, certificate of honor, a symbolic representation of the award, and the awardee is invited to attend the annual meeting of the PAHO Directing Council and be a guest of honor at PAHO/PAHEF’s awards program event in Washington, DC. Winners of the Horwitz, Velasco Suárez, and Arouca awards will be able to address ministers of health of the hemisphere, their delegations, and invited guests of PAHO at Directing Council.
