Nov. 7, 2010 -- The Board of Governors of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), has elected William Warren Smith, PhD, to serve as the fifth President of the regional institution based in Barbados. The election took place at a special meeting of the Governors held on Friday October 29, 2010.

Dr. Smith, a national of Jamaica and who was nominated by that country, is currently acting in the capacity of Vice-President of Operations. Prior to taking up that acting position on August 16, 2010, he served as Director, Finance and Corporate Planning.

"I am grateful to the Governors of CDB for their vote of confidence in me. I consider it a very great honour and privilege to have been selected to lead this important regional institution in these challenging times. I intend to remain humble and focused on the task ahead," Smith said after the election.

The President elect was educated at Cornell University in the United States. He graduated Magna cum Laude in 1974 with an AB in Economics (Hon) and went on to read for a M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics and for a Ph.D. in Resource Economics and Public Policy.

Dr. Smith, who turned 58 on August 16, 2010, is in his second stint at CDB. He first joined the Bank in 1985 and left in 1987, before returning in 1998. He has also held high level positions at a number of other institutions in the Region. These include Director of Economics and Planning Division at the Jamaica National Investment Company; Vice-President, Investments at Life of Jamaica Limited and Chief Executive Officer at LIAT (1974) Limited.

Dr. Smith replaces Dr. Compton Bourne who has been the CDB President since 2001. The Board of Directors expressed its sincere thanks to Dr. Bourne for his years of professional and unstinting service to the Bank and the wider region.

The new President will assume office on May 1, 2011.
