Kingston -- June 10, 2010 -- Cabinet has approved draft proposals for the introduction of legislation for the suppression and disruption of criminal gangs and their activities. The announcement was made by Minister with responsibility for Information, Telecommunications and Special Projects, Hon. Daryl Vaz, at the weekly Post Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Tuesday (June 9).

He noted that the legislation will provide for the issuing of drafting instructions to the Chief Parliamentary Counsel (CPC).

Minister Vaz said that the unit will be comprised of investigators and analysts, with continuous support from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to target the most organised and violent gangs operating in Jamaica.

He stated that an anti-gang special support unit will be established within the Ministry of National Security to ensure that adequate financial resources are provided for anti-gang activities. An anti-gang unit will also be established within the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
