Symbolic gesture
The protocol legally establishes enhanced consultation for bilateral cooperation in resolving international issues, and serves to strengthen the ties of friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation between Antigua and Barbuda and the Russian Federation.
The signing of the protocol on January 5th, 2010 was a symbolic gesture, as this date marks the 20th year anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Antigua and Barbuda and the Russian Federation.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister graciously expressed his appreciation to the Russian Ambassador for visiting Antigua and Barbuda on the occasion of the 20th Anniversary of Antigua and Barbuda-Russian relations. In this context, Prime Minister Spencer and Ambassador Zotin exchanged official congratulatory letters to commemorate the significant event.
Among matters discussed was the prospect of promoting Antigua and Barbuda as a tourism destination to Russian tourists, and by extension, as an attractive country for investment. The Prime Minister also briefly touched on the issue of maritime cooperation, and the possibility of attracting more Russian vessels to register at Antigua and Barbuda Shipping Registry.
Ambassador Zotin communicated his pleasure in having secured scholarships from Russia to help educate young Antiguans and Barbudans and to promote national development. In this regard, three (3) students from Antigua and Barbuda will be travelling to Russia this year to study at universities in Moscow.
Both the Prime Minister and the Russian Ambassador communicated their willingness to pursue the expansion of these fruitful relations, and further emphasized the significance of the protocol, which would serve as a strong basis for deepening the relationship.
Also in attendance of the meeting were His Excellency, Ambassador Liverpool, Non-Resident Ambassador to Japan; Mr. Egor V. Blagodatskiy, and senior staff of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
