The site, which caters to nationals from all Caribbean islands, was founded in December 2004 as a way to provide news and information to the growing Caribbean American community in South Florida.

“There was a need in the market from both a reader’s perspective and advertisers wanting to reach the Caribbean American community,” said founder Ian Hamilton.

The annual Black Web Awards was created to recognize and celebrate African, African American and Caribbean excellence online.

"We are pleased to organize and launch this important milestone event for the Black web," said Odogwu Obi Linton, president of Linton Publishing, LLC, a Baltimore, Maryland based, 100 percent Black owned and operated company. “It's long overdue, and will help to promote hundreds of creative and original online efforts to the world.”

In addition to news stories, SouthFloridaCaribbeannews.com also lists contact information for Caribbean American organizations in South Florida; Caribbean American elected officials and Consul Generals; other Caribbean American media, and a calendar of events highlighting local Caribbean hot spots.

South Florida Caribbean News’ subscribers receive e-mail updates three times per week. While the majority of subscribers are based in South Florida, the site receives hundreds of unique visitors from countries around the world.

“I am truly honored that my web-site has been nominated,” Hamilton stated. “This is motivation for me, as it lets me know that I have created a product that is being recognized and has value.”

Readers and visitors from over three hundred Black themed websites will have the opportunity to cast their vote for their favorite in over 100 categories at www.blackwebawards.com/news_ballot. Ballots close on October 20, 2006, and winners will be announced online on November 17.
