St. George's, Grenada -- May 7, 2008 -- Prime
Minister Dr. The Rt. Hon. Keith Mitchell has launched a National Health
and fitness programme called Get Fit Grenada. The Programme was
launched on Saturday April 26th at the Body and Soul Gym and is aimed
at promoting Healthy Lifestyles by emphasizing exercise and healthy
diets. Speaking at the launch on Saturday, Prime Minister Mitchell
said, "I am very saddened when I see families lose fathers, mothers and
other family members very early in life. Lifestyle as it relates to
diet and exercise affects every aspect of the family. We have become
too sedentary! Gone are the days when entire villages not only
participated in sporting events but also walked from village to village
to compete. Through this programme I want to see us eat better,
exercise more and live better."
Members of the Medical Association, St. George's University,
Sporting Associations, private sector companies, and The Food and
Nutrition Council attended Saturday's launch. Prime Minister Mitchell
thanked them for attending and for partnering with Government in this
important initiative. Also pledging their support for the initiative is
the Pan American Health organization and the Caricom Secretariat.
A key aspect of the ceremony was the launch of www.getfitgrenada.com.
The website offers advice on health and wellness to the Grenadian
community and will have an interactive forum where persons can ask
advice about their health and fitness regime.
The Get Fit Grenada initiative is aimed at improving the quality of
lives of the Grenadian public by improving the health of the
population. The programme is specifically geared towards lowering the
incidence of chronic diseases affecting the Grenadian community
