Jamaica's first female Director of Public
Prosecutions (DPP) Paula Llewellyn will officially take up office on Wednesday.Miss Llewellyn created history when she was selected on Tuesday to replace Kent Pantry, who retired last month. Mr. Pantry served as DPP for a decade. In her first media interview following her appointment Miss Llewellyn said the first task will be to reorganize the Department, in a bid to improve its operational efficiency. "We certainly will seek to satisfy the public's right to know...but (we just ask) that for the next few weeks (the public) bear with us because we will have to reorganize in certain areas in order to enhance performance efficiencies," said Miss Llewellyn while speaking on RJR's current affairs discussion programme Beyond the Headlines on Tuesday. The DPP said she would also be meeting with representatives of human rights groups to discuss their concerns about how cases are prosecuted. In the meantime, Miss Llewellyn denied knowledge of an alleged incident in which the former DPP Kent Pantry was on Tuesday unceremoniously cleared out of his office. She said Mr. Pantry was given a cordial send off by staff at the DPP's office. "I participated in a meeting of all the staff (Monday) evening at 4 o'clock, where Mr. Pantry was very warmly given a nice send off in terms of the accolades that were paid to him by several members of staff. He was able to indicate in a statesman-like way his appreciation for all the work and support that he had received from members of staff. The atmosphere was extremely cordial," she said. |
