Bilateral air transport agreement already in place

Ottawa, Canada -- Sept. 24, 2007 -- The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, today announced the designation of WestJet to operate scheduled international air services between Canada and St. Lucia.

"The designation of WestJet as a scheduled carrier provides more choice for travellers," said Minister Cannon. "I am pleased that WestJet has decided to expand its services to St. Lucia."

Under the provisions of Canada's international air transportation policy, all Canadian air carriers may apply to the Minister for designation to operate scheduled international air services. This latest designation was facilitated by the bilateral air transport agreement already in place between the Government of Canada and the Government of St. Lucia.

The agreement permits each country to designate any number of airlines for the operation of scheduled air services between Canada and St. Lucia. In addition, there are no limits on the frequency of flights each designated airline is allowed to operate.
