CARICOM August 17, 2006....Following is the text of a message from
H.E. Edwin Carrington, Secretary-General, Caribbean
Community (CARICOM), on the thrilling victory by the
Guyana cricket team in the final of the inaugural
Stanford 20/20 Cricket Tournament held in Antigua
and Barbuda.
“I extend heartiest congratulations to the
Guyanese team on your thrilling victory in the final
of the inaugural Stanford 20/20 Cricket Tournament.
Your grit, and determination to win, exemplified
by the leadership of captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, saw
you to a deserving victory over very worthy
opponents, Trinidad and Tobago, who must also be
highly commended for their performances both in the
final and throughout the tournament.
I also take this opportunity to congratulate Mr
Allen Stanford and our cricketing legends for their
efforts in bringing the people of the Community
together for such an innovative and enjoyable event
which certainly captured the imagination of the
region’s population. The many teams which
participated - ranging from Jamaica to Nevis - the
large crowds that turned out throughout the
tournament and the interest displayed across the
region bear testimony to its success.
West Indians worldwide can feel proud that an
event of such quality took place in the Caribbean
and this can only augur well for the ICC Cricket
World Cup 2007, and the prospects for youths
throughout the region who aspire to cricket beyond
national boundaries”.
