Sums obtained being audited
Georgetown, Guyana -- June 8, 2007 -- Government has recovered $207,235,750 of an overall $976,209,120 which
it hopes to recoup from hosting Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2007.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony in a written response to Alliance for Change (AFC) leader Raphael Trotman’s Motion in the National Assembly yesterday, stated that the sums obtained are being audited by the Auditor General and the final figures will be made available in the report.
Trotman’s Motion is seeking to have the National Assembly direct the Economic Services Committee to conduct a review of all processes and aspects of the preparation and hosting of the games. The motion also sought to make recommendations thereafter for future events and for the viability of the National Stadium at Providence.
Minister Anthony during his presentation at the last Sitting said that Government’s report on the cost of hosting the event is reliant on reports to be submitted from several organisations, including CWC 2007 Inc. which will have to provide information of several
aspects of the event.
At yesterday’s sitting Trotman accepted the Culture Minister’s proposed amendment ‘to consider the government’s report on the hosting of ICC CWC WI 2007 in Guyana and its recommendations and to consider these’. The Motion was passed with the amendment.
The Local Organising Committee (LOC), CWC and other stakeholders would being submitting a report which will be laid in Parliament, Minister Anthony said.
Anti-infringement and ambush marketing in Guyana, tickets sales for each of the matches held in Guyana and information on the Common Domestic Space, the regional security arrangements and other details relating to Guyana’s hosting of the matches will have to be submitted by CWC Inc.
Other organisations which will provide information are the Guyana Water Inc., Guyana Power & Light, Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company, the private sector, persons involved in the Bed & Breakfast Programme, Guyana Cricket Board and several Ministries. Guyana hosted the Super Eight matches from March 28 to April 9.
