Communities evaluated
Castries, St. lucia -- 21 Feb., 2007 --- The Saint Lucia Solid Waste Management Authority is presently fine tuning the waste management programme and issues to be addressed with respect to the hosting of Cricket World Cup all in an effort to ensure that a high standard is maintained in the management of solid waste.
The Authority has procured additional equipment to deal with the projected increase in the volume of waste to be managed at the Deglos Sanitary Landfill. In addition longer operating hours will be instituted at the landfill. The Authority has also conducted an evaluation of communities likely to generate more waste as a result of visitors to the island. The present collection system will therefore be adjusted in some communities based on this evaluation. As such the affected communities would be required to cooperate if the plan is to be successfully implemented. The plan would however require careful monitoring during the implementation phase in order to determine whether any changes are necessary.
The major challenge for the Authority with respect to Cricket World Cup has been the coordination of stakeholders. With full support from the Minister of Sports and the Minister in the Ministry of Sports we have been able to work closely with the major stakeholders namely CWC Inc., Castries City Council, Local Action Teams, SLASPA and the Ministry of Communications, Works, Transport & Public Utilities to drive the process forward.
