Brades, Montserrat -- 31 Jan., 2007 -- Montserrat registered enterprise Emerald Spa, recently launched the production of and promotion of volcanic soaps - exquisite natural soaps capturing the therapeutic cleansing qualities of Montserrat’s active Soufriere Hills Volcano.
These hand made soaps embody a unique fusion of natural volcanic ash, clay and fine sand, fresh local aloe, rosemary, honey, coconut and other natural oil and mineral blends. Bay leaf and lemon grass essential oils and mango fragrance, delicately scent the soaps. The soaps are naturally textured for gentle cleansing abrasion, thus enhancing the radiance of the skin and are complemented by slices of Pumice stone from the Soufriere Hills Volcano.
Emerald Spa is the brainchild of Anne and Lorenzo Cassell (brother of Montserrat’s most famous son, soca superstar Arrow). Anne brings to this initiative extensive and in-depth training in Chemistry and other Natural Sciences up to Masters Degree level, from Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. She also has over thirty years experience teaching science-related subjects at the Montserrat Secondary School and several other secondary schools in the United Kingdom and Barbados. This extensive training and experience have provided the perfect knowledge base and expertise for the creation of a well-balanced, high-quality soap. Anne says: "I have always had a passion for experimenting with the creation of new products based on what is available in the natural environment."
Anne’s husband Lorenzo, who is responsible for the business development of the product, said: “At the moment we are putting our energies into enhanced packaging and more extensive distribution for 2007. Additionally, eventually, when we are able to complete the work space area, we hope to be able to invite viewings of live soap production to students interested in science and business, other members of the community and tourists on sightseeing tours.”
In July of 2006, the services of leading U.S. Natural Soap Production consultants, Larry Plesant and Sandy Lincoln of Vermont Soapworks, U.S.A. were secured to provide a four- day technical assistance stint to the initiative. Emerald Spa also utilized the expertise of Mr. Colin Bully and his team at the OECS Export Development Unit, headquartered in Dominica. They provided technical and marketing assistance required for the launching of the product.
Gift sets of soap and pumice rock are initially available at the leading souvenir retail stores in Montserrat. The plan is to also have them available for sale online and in other shops internationally later this year.
